Training involves not just the cost of tuition fees, but additional requirements for supervision, personal therapy, books and journals, professional indemnity insurance and membership of professional bodies such as BACP and BPS. Persons who want to train as counsellors because they see therapy as a career are best discouraged. Feltham (1993) discusses making a living as a counsellor and comments that `I, and most other counsellors I know, cannot rely on income purely from counselling private clients'.

Many BACP members found themselves mourning the loss of the peer assessment process. However, an equal number welcomed what they saw as a more professional approach to accreditation. One of the dif®culties surrounding the old system was the reliance on volunteer input from assessors. The new system allows for dedicated staff to work closely together to agreed deadlines ensuring that all applications receive a more standardised assessment from a group of people trained and experienced in a variety of therapeutic approaches.

These were people whose original training had been less than 450 hours and who had not been practising for ten years: for example, a counsellor who had 350 hours of training and had been practicising for six years. Even though this counsellor may have undertaken additional training under the auspices of continued professional development (CPD) which may have accounted for a further 300 hours, none of this could be taken into account under the scheme. As a result in 1994 BACP introduced what became known as the `Middle Route'.
