Some papers arising from David Hannay’s research into illness behaviour were published as The Symptom Iceberg in 1979. John Goldie, an Easterhouse general practitioner, obtained his MD based on student responses to ethical dilemmas. Other publications reflected Hamish Barber’s pioneering work on health visitor programmes of prevention for children and care of the elderly. At one time, half the general practices in Scotland were using his Woodside child health record. In 1975, Hamish Barber produced a textbook entitled General Practice Medicine, with contributions from members of the department and others.

With the opening of a major health sciences centre at Belfield, most early teaching has moved to the university campus and a major network of teaching general practices (currently almost 150) has been developed.
