She looked back once. The Doctor had placed a row of opened tins at the base of the wall. He hesitated, took a lump of cheese and laid that down as well. He didn't look round. Ace turned swiftly on her heel. With her head down and shoulders hunched, she walked quickly away. The Doctor didn't notice. He checked his arrangements again and nodded in satisfaction. He climbed over the wall and crouched in the garden on the other side. Only his hat and eyes were visible as he peered over the top of the wall at the opened cans.
Were they actually the animals he feared and if so were they alone? How probable was that? Ace looked at him and sighed. She opened her mouth to speak then paused, frowning. Somewhere round the corner of the precinct a slow rattling trickled through the silence. Ace moved off to investigate. Still staring at the ground, the Doctor drifted after her. Ace looked round and through the glass window of a chemist's shop and into the next courtyard of the precinct. She peered through the shampoo bottles and shower caps and saw a young woman standing there dejectedly shaking a collecting can with monotonous jerks of her wrist.
At the end of the path Ace had had enough. ' Paterson chuckled. 'Doctor, eh? ' The Doctor looked at Paterson in surprise. ' 'Well, my word for it would be scrawny, sir,' Paterson's chuckle deepended. 'You want to build yourself up Doc. ' Across the centuries, every Time Lord of necessity acquires a wide range of crushing retorts, insults and put-downs in the billions of languages of the universe. The Doctor looked at Paterson for a second, considered a few of them, but decided not to waste the effort.
